Stephen M Goldsmith
started his craft at the Rochester College of Art (KIAD) in 1971.
went on to do a four year apprenticeship in polishing with C. J Vander just off
Hatton Garden with a three year day release in Silversmithing at his
old college. After leaving Vander's he went onto work for a short
time with Stuart Devlin
then moved to Nayler Bros in 1977.
Nayler was the main workshop for
Garrard's the Crown Jewellers. Later in years Garrard's joined Asprey.
Stephen worked on various projects for the rich &
famous, plus many of the World Famous Sports Trophies and is often still seen polishing the Premier League Cup on Sky sports.
Asprey craftsmen joined him in 1999 but was eventually made redundant
20 other craftsmen in 2003, after 26 years loyal service. "SMG
(Kent) Ltd" was born on 2nd of May 2003 enabling Stephen to carry
on his good work in
the craft he most enjoys.
Stephen is a Freeman of The Worshipful Company of Goldsmith's and was granted the Freedom of the
City of London in 1975; he is also a Fellow of The Institute of
Professional Goldsmith's. He has also had the very rare honour of winning
The Goldsmith's Company Award twice, plus many other prestigious
awards and has served as a judge for the last few years on behalf of the Craft's Council Awards .
While working for
Garrard's Stephen advised the Army and Buckingham Palace on how to care for their very special
He has also been privileged to work in the jewel house at
the Tower of London restoring a wine cistern which was made in 1830 and
used only the once by Queen Victoria.
